With over 9 million active monthly users on Facebook alone, Pet Society has proven that simple, cute flash games can win a lot of people over in a heartbeat.
In Pet Society, players can create their own cute little pets by choosing from the different parts and colors available at the Stylist. The screenshot above is of my own pet, Koochi, visiting the Stylist.
There are a variety of shops where players can purchase items (like clothes, food, and furniture) for their pets. Pets also have their own houses that players can furnish according to their own tastes.
Doing certain tasks and activities in Pet Society rewards players with gold and Paw Points. These include visiting your friends' pets, taking care of your pet (and taking care of other people's pets, actually), and playing the Racing mini-game. Gold is used to buy items, while Paw Points are essentially experience points that increase pets' levels. Increasing your pet's level earns you more gold and additional rooms for your house or upgrades to your pet's basic items (soap, brush, and some toys).
Players can also complete certain "achievements" to earn some spiffy trophies to display in their pets' houses.
The Pet Society community itself is pretty active, as evidenced by the . Players go there to trade and/or sell their items, and some players even hold contests and giveaways.
What I really like about Pet Society is how easy it is to get into. All you really have to do to earn points/gold is to play that racing game, visit your friends, and take care of your pet. It's that simple. I've actually been playing a little Pet Society every day, even when I was kind of busy with school, because I don't really have to put a lot of time and/or effort into it. My only major complaints about Pet Society are the lack of variety in mini games (one can get tired of racing after a while), and the fact that the rewards for tasks and the mini-game are kind of small while the items are too expensive (though players have the option of purchasing gold through credit card payments). Some players have already complained about this at the Pet Society forums, so hopefully PlayFish will do something about it in the future.
