First Impressions: Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood

I was supposed to write a review about something serious (like Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale) but then curiosity got the best of me and then I started playing Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, and it was over for Atwood’s review before I’d even written a word.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is the third installment in the Ubisoft’s similarly titled Assassin’s Creed series (AC for short for some, but I prefer the more crass nickname, AssCreed). A quick summary of the plot would be that a group of assassins have been waging a war against power hungry organizations since the Crusades, and it is up to Desmond Miles to discover the secrets of his ancestors hidden in his DNA, so that he can save everyone.

Now, I haven’t played the Story Mode of Brotherhood yet, but I was curious enough to fiddle around with the Multiplayer Mode, since AC2 didn’t have anything like that. Gameplay is similar to the Tenchu series on the PS2, which awards higher points to the player for killing targets without being spotted or just generally being more discrete. If you like planning your moves, hanging on roof ledges, diving into haystacks, and waiting for just the right moment to swoop down on your target and stab them, then you’ll love this game.

Brotherhood‘s Multiplayer mode makes it more interesting by pitting you up against 6-7 other players with the same assassin’s training, all whom enact their own personal playing styles in your little arena of murder. You can choose to play either Alliance, Manhunt, or Wanted, which makes it more diverse and  interesting because of the amount of options you can choose from: hunter, hunted, team player or solo flyer. Whatever floats your boat, it’s there.

I could blather on about the technical stuff, but I’d just like to gleefully share that I was giggling like an idiot whenever I stabbed some poor soul from behind. Brotherhood fulfills all my delusions of cunning, stealth and general bad-assery. On the best days, I have the grace of a baby walrus, so sneaking up on people, even if in just a video game  is an experience I cherish with all my heart.

Also, aside from Final Fantasy, Tenchu was one of the few other series on the PS2 that I followed obsessively, even though no one else seemed as engrossed in it as I was, and AC is so reminiscent of it that I can’t help but take to it right off the bat. Sure they’re not even set in the same continent, but as long as I can skewer people and perform stealth attacks on enemy guards from roof ledges, I’m happy.

Story-wise, I don’t know what to expect yet. AssCreed 2 had a typical plot (save the world, la-di-doo-da) but I’ll try to keep an open mind with this one and see if Ubisoft hid some dazzling plot that will totally blow my breath away. Who knows. But even without the plot, I’m perfectly happy with Brotherhood. Multiplayer mode just made the money I spent on it worth it, for me. I’ll just stand here, in my corner, killing noobs in costume, eating sugar and passing out from the adrenaline rush.
