X-Men: First Class is...well, you know what it is. It's a Matthew Vaughn film released in 2011, and serves as a prequel to the X-Men movies. A lot of people and movie critics liked it, apparently.
But for some reason, I didn't like it.
The visuals were stunning, I agree; and Michael Fassbender was definitely as Magneto. But that wasn't really enough to prevent me from making faces while watching it and sending complaints via SMS to my dad, who has been a fan of X-Men way before I was even a twinkle in his eye.
This, folks, is why you should listen to your X-Men fanboy (fanman?) father when he says that the X-Men movies are crap. Especially when he's been sharing his fandom with you since you were eight years old.
I just couldn't stand how different the characters and details were from what I remember from the comics and animated series. A friend pointed out to me that I shouldn't be getting so worked up over details like Moira MacTaggert not being Scottish. Or Banshee not being Irish. Or that "Angel" is like a hooker version of . Or that the first class kids shown in the movie are not actually the first class (there's only one guy from the real first class of X-Men there, and he was kind of lame). Or that Charles was supposed to be bald by the time he started college.
Wait, what was my point?
OH. A friend was telling me I shouldn't be getting so worked up over details like those because the movies have a different timeline/storyline than the X-Men comics or animated series. And in a way, he's right. This is an adaptation based on the X-Men universe. Of course the directors and scriptwriters had the liberty to change a few things.
Sadly, I can't really help it. I'm very particular about adaptations, and I like to see adaptations that actually manage to convey the contents of the original material without making too many "modifications" to it. Either that, or the modifications should enhance the source material, or make it better. The X-Men movies just went ballistic with the modifications that did not help improve anything, and this one is no different. I'm not happy about it at all.
Final Verdict
Personal Rating:

Non-Anal/Objective Rating:

Setting all that ranting aside, though, I suppose X-Men: First Class would have been more enjoyable if I just stopped being so anal about the details. If I were to just forget everything I mentioned above, I'd say: The story was tolerable, but character development was kind of flat; the actors were okay, but the younger characters (e.g. Banshee, Angel, and Darwin) were poorly portrayed; Michael Fassbender was like a boss as Magneto ( I feel the need to say that 400 times like a boss)...
...and Wolverine's cameo was the best scene in the entire movie.
