Favorite 90s Anime Music Discoveries on Spotify

For a long, long time, I relied heavily on YouTube and Soundcloud to indulge my 90s anime music binging because Spotify’s music library was woefully incomplete. But I recently found some of my old favorites and more!

Here are just a few of my favorite finds this week:

Yu Yu Hakusho Collective Songs

I recently sold my old cassette tape of this album, so I’m really glad it’s actually on Spotify! Yu Yu Hakusho Collective Songs includes the series’ iconic opening theme (“Hohoemi no Bakudan”), all 5 ending themes, and nine image songs (including my absolute favorite image song of all time—”Kurayami ni Akai Bara”).

Animegu by Ogata Megumi

Voice actress Ogata Megumi (who voices Kurama in Yu Yu Hakusho) has an album called Animegu, which is full of 90s anime song covers! It includes songs like “Hohoemi no Bakudan” from Yu Yu Hakusho, “Zankoku na Angel no TEEZE” from Neon Genesis Evangelion, “Moonlight Densetsu” from Sailor Moon, and “Yuzurenai Negai” from Magic Knight Rayearth. The interesting part is that these songs are all from 90s-2000s anime series she lent her voice to (you may recognize her as Shinji Ikari in Evangelion, Sailor Uranus in Sailor Moon, Emeraude and Eagle Vision from Rayearth).

On another note, she also has a duet version of “Taiyou ga Mata Kagayaku Toki” (the fourth ending theme for Yu Yu Hakusho) with none other than Hiyama Nobuyuki, Hiei’s voice actor.

Yakusoku wa Iranai Single by Maaya Sakamoto

Yakusoku wa Iranai single

Most of Maaya Sakamoto’s music has been up on Spotify for a while now, but I’m especially happy to see her Tenkuu no Escaflowne tracks! This single in particular includes two tracks: the classic opening theme “Yakusoku wa Iranai” and the insert song “Tomodachi”. Her Escaflowne movie single, which includes “Yubiwa” and “Vector”, is also available!

Just Communication Single by TWO-MIX

I honestly don’t remember a lot from my days of watching Gundam Wing, but the music was unforgettable. Horrible Engrish aside, “Just Communication” is arguably one of the most iconic opening themes of its time.

Aside from “Just Communication” two other iconic tracks from Gundam Wing are also on Spotify: “Rhythm Emotion” by TWO-MIX and “It’s Just Love!” by Ohishi Rumi.

Initial D – Multiple Albums

Whoever the lazy person who made the Initial D Spotify playlist should be ashamed for just grabbing tracks from ONE Initial D album! Spotify actually has four full Initial D soundtracks, and one curated collection by none other than Dave Rodgers (Initial D fans may best know him for “Space Boy”). My personal favorites are spread across multiple soundtracks, so you may have to do some digging around to find your specific faves:

I still go to YouTube or Soundcloud for some of my old and new favorites that haven’t made it to Spotify yet (where is my Magic Knight Rayearth, Sailor Moon, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and Kill la Kill???), but now that Spotify has a dedicated “Anime” genre, I’m hoping we’ll see more tracks soon!
